The Charter

The Safer Communities Alliance was formed in early 2010 by a group of Tweed Coast parents concerned with the growing vandalism and number of violent incidents in the area.

The Alliance’s first step in garnishing recognition of the issue was to hold a public rally in March 2010, allowing local people to voice their concerns and to begin working towards resolutions. The rally was a great success and attracted over 1000 people.

The Alliance also conducted a petition at this time, calling for increased police numbers and more high-profile policing. Over 3,000 signatures were collected, which along with the success of the rally, proved how much local people were concerned.

Following the petition and the rally, the Alliance now hopes to make use of the spotlight that has been shone on this problem, and by working with its priority partners, to work towards achieving some real and tangible outcomes.

The broad objectives of the SCA are as follows:

  • To continue to call for increased police numbers and more high-profile policing for the Tweed area.
  • To seek changes and solutions to the Tweed/Coolangatta cross-border policing issues.
  • To seek changes to legislation in regards to the way young violent offenders are handled.
  • To see an expansion of preventative programs implemented in local primary and high schools.
  • To see an increase in the availability of youth services in the area, particularly in terms of crisis services.
  • To provide support and information to parents of young people.
  • To provide support and information to the elders of the community.
  • To seek an increase in transport services for the Tweed/Coolangatta area.
  • To provide a united front for individuals or organisations already working in any of the above areas who are seeking further support or funding.
