Preventative Programs
There are great programs and dedicated people already out there working with young people in schools, and out of school, to try and prevent young people getting off the track. Unfortunately they are not widespread enough, tend to neglect primary schools where real prevention can take place; and are struggling for funding.
The Safer Communities Alliance (SCA) would like to see such programs fully supported and funded by government, and practising in all primary and high schools in the Tweed region.
One example of such a group is The Family Centre, based on the Tweed, who run a variety of preventative programs in primary and high schools. Unfortunately, the funding for the primary program REALskills, which is limited to a selection of primary schools in Murwillumbah, is due to run out in July, 2010, with no promise of any further funding in sight.
The SCA is calling for the community to put pressure on the Australian Government to not only maintain, but extend this quality program.
